The first issue of Veja, a weekly magazine from Editora Abril, founded by Victor Civita and directed by Mino Carta, arrives at Brazilian newsstands. One hundred pages, stapled format, cover featuring a four-color photograph of Kim Phuc from the Vietnam War. Initial print run of 700,000 copies.\n\nThe cover was rejected by the editorial board twice before the final edition. Mino Carta defended the photo. Civita approved it. The newsroom had 33 journalists, located on Rua Conselheiro Nébias, in São Paulo, in three floors of Abril's own building. The initial salary for a writer was 1,200 cruzeiros novos, equivalent to three minimum wages at the time.\n\nVeja entered the market in direct competition with Manchete, from Bloch, and with Realidade, a weekly from Abril itself that had existed since April 1966 and closed in 1976. Realidade was the longform laboratory that trained part of Veja's initial team.\n\nMino Carta directed Veja until 1976, when he was dismissed after disagreements with the Civita family regarding the coverage of Geisel's détente policy. He founded IstoÉ in the same year, with Editora Três. He returned to founding magazines in 1994, with Carta Capital, at his own publishing house.\n\nVeja was the first Brazilian news weekly with its own edition, its own newsroom, mass-scale circulation, and continuous weekly periodicity. It has been in circulation for 57 years.\n\n## Sources\n\n- [Veja, \"História da Veja\"](https://veja.abril.com.br/historia-da-veja/).
